Economist
The British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur is part of a world-wide network of 230 Posts, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. This senior position will work to achieve the British Government’s objective of “a low carbon, high growth, global economy” by analysing economic developments and undertaking activities which advance the UK & Malaysia’s joint economic interests.
This includes work on the most exciting and high-level economic issues such as reform of the global financial and economic architecture, and close collaboration with the SE Asia climate change team.

As part of a regional team, you will also analyse and report SE Asian economic developments, and support UK policy throughout the region. You will join a team of six economists based throughout SE Asia reporting to the Team Leader based in Singapore.

Main Duties
- Monitoring, analysing and reporting regularly on the Malaysian economy
- Writing reports on SE Asian regional economic trends and developments to inform UK policymaking
- Fostering UK-Malaysian economic collaboration including input to negotiations an EU-Malaysia Free Trade Agreement
- Advancing UK economic objectives in Malaysia (in collaboration with UK diplomats). You will do this by developing a network of influential Malaysian contacts, acquiring detailed knowledge of the UK’s economic objectives, and providing clear briefing to senior diplomats and visitors
- Engaging relevant senior UK visitors to help us communicate UK priorities to senior Malaysian policymakers. You will facilitate these visits and work to increase UK-Malaysian expert-level contact
- Ensuring business continuity, by having a “secondary” – another economist in the regional team. This gives the jobholder an opportunity to expand their knowledge of the region

Requirements
- A degree in Economics or a related field, with preferably at least 3 years of relevant working experience
- Familiarity with the Malaysian economy and preferably, the UK
- An understanding of regional economic issues an advantage
- Excellent communications skills
- Excellent written and spoken English. Proficiency in written and spoken Malay advantageous
- Self-motivation and ability to work under light supervision
- Be willing to travel that involves overnight stays.
